Gamer question
« on: February 24, 2010, 05:40:55 pm »
I have found in recent months that, for me, toe hang is first and foremost in what putter I use.  For instance, I have a Studio Design 3.5 which is a mid slant neck with a toe hang of about 4.  It just fits.  So, I had my newest Byron made with that toe hang even though it's a longer round neck.  Plus, I sent in another Byron with a rincon neck to have changed to the same toe hang.  I feel like I could pretty much putt with any style of neck or head as long as the toe hang was where I want it.  Thoughts on this?

It has to be an Anser/Anser 2 style with a plumbers neck. Mainly Anser 2 styles. But all my putters have plumbers necks...

Cost...more expensive = better putter , right?

but as far as those 4 go.....the middle 2 and purely based on liking what I see when standing over a putt.  Flow necks seem odd to me and I still haven't figured out why but I think I could use a flow neck if there was a socket/barrel for the shaft....I think it just breaks up the view a little better for me...if that makes sense.  Head shape is next.  Pure blades or something similar just don't give me the confidence of a cavity putter.  Then the other 2 go together......my stroke is a problem and inconsistent so I'm not sure different toe hangs would make any difference at all.  I can't wait until I feel comfortable with the basics of putting so that I can focus on toe hang again. :(

One other thing that I look for is alignment aids.  siteline for me and I have a sitedot phobia that I'm trying to get over.

In picking my gamer it is all based on feel.  I like a flow neck putter and I am not affraid to fire a putter and bring in its replacement.

I hear you, Doc!  Gotta keep your putters in line.

So far, it looks like I am in the minority in my gamer assessment.  Toe hang doesn't seem to be that important to most so far...

I have found that the shaper of the head matters less to me than the "slant" of the neck.  May just be mental though.

Good poll Jeff.  I suggest that stroke determines toe-hang.  An SBST or a player with minimal arc and gate effect will want less toe-hang.  In other words, aren't stroke and toe-hang kind of the same as one begets the other?  ???

What about material as a determining factor?  Some people feel strongly about what their putter is made out of...

You could be right, Dave.  Perhaps stroke determines what neck you prefer.  I have more of a SBST with a bit of a forward press, so...

Plus, all my putters are carbon which seems to be more of a feel thing.  I still think I could putt well with a different material as long as the toe hang remained the same.

I would have to say it is more of the way the putter sets up for me with the neck I can putt with any style head as long as it doesn't have a huge offset of set up different to the ball...

I've always played plumbers neck putters with only a small amount of toe hang, I recently picked up a flow neck putter with a lot and I was able to adapt to it pretty well. I wonder if toe hang of the putter is really as big a deal as well all make it out to be. I think there was another thread on this site that talked about a study of a blindfolded golfer trying a two-ball putter vs. a flow neck putter to see if their stroke was different and finding that there were no meaningful differences. To me, I think it's all about confidence in your gamer and certain characteristics will either inspire or detract from that confidence without having a huge impact on the actual performance of the club.
I could be completely wrong though. I know virtually nothing about different putting methods or the physics behind them. Just my $.02

For me it is a combination of head style and toe hang.  Anser style heads that are face balanced to 4:30 are my preference.  I am excited to try a 6:00 toe hang Palombi 421 this spring though.

Gifted putters can putt well with just about anything that has good balance. In my case it comes down to the intangibles - faith in something and familiarity.

Has to be a plumbers neck, sight line and around 350 grams.  Anything else just becomes head games with me.

Neck style for me, you can give me a rock as long as it has a plumbers neck on it.
