Best way to care for your putter
« on: February 12, 2010, 04:16:16 pm »
I just purchased a soft carbon steel Bettinardi.  I am aware that since it is not plated I will need to give it some extra attention.  I have never owned a putter that I need to care for (I have always gone for the maintenance free finishes).  What products do you guys use after the round to care for your putters?

Thanks.

A lot of people use electrical grade CRC silicone spray.  Spray on a rag and wipe the putter down after you use it.

Keep the putter dry between uses and never put it in a wet headcover and you should be good to go.

Which putter did you get?

I picked up a Half Moon Mallet, RJB2157, from Jimmy.  It has the chocolate patina finish to it.  Looks good in the pics and I the FedEx tracking email says I should have it tomorrow.  I will try and post actual pics (the putter is going to "pop" against all the snow on the ground) this weekend.

Never owned a putter that required work after the round.  I usually wipe the putter down with a towel after every hole and give it a good wipe down after the round, but I knew that I would have to do more with this finish.  I assume that you can buy this at a Home Depot or Lowes?

The silicon spray above is great for home use, and get a silicone cloth (usually in firearms section of Dick's, Wal Mart, etc.) to keep in your golf bag...and whatever you do, don't leave your putter in a damp headcover overnight.
A wise man once said, "You don't have enough putters...until you have ALL the putters."

They are less work that you would think.  Just keep it dry between uses.  It's also nice if you have a good backup to use on rainy days or after greens have been fertilized so you don't have to worry as much.

A cloth for the bag makes a lot of sense.  I will definitely pick one up.

My backup is a retail BB-32.  The main problem I run into is we play early in the morning when the grass is wet, but like I mentioned, I wipe the putter down before it goes back in the bag.

Hi Steve

Great pick up, I had a good look at that one too but, went carefree with RJB2158.

Did you see that RJB2266 WOW just too light.

Glad to hear Jimmy helped you out too.

I used to put gun oil on the fur inside the headcover just, not sure how easy that is to do with the new headcovers.

Enjoy it.

Tony,

RJB2266 is fantastic.  That putter was listed on Nick's site.  I would have had a very tough decision if RJB2266 was 10 grams heavier.  I like the darker look of putters, so I am very happy with what I got.  Ideally, a Half Moon in the finish you have with the double bend shaft would have been perfect, but I am excited to receive my chocolate patina!

John (Jr) has mentioned putting oil inside a headcover and using that when he is not using the putter, but I think you are correct that it may be tough with the new covers. You might not get any oil where the putterhead sits.

What headcover do you have on your Half Moon?

Great pick-up Steve. That putter had my name all over it, if it would have been available I would have grabbed it.

Thanks Jason... The putter was up on Jimmy's site the previous night and when I went back the next day it was still there.  I figured that was the sign to buy it!
